A font is the combination of typeface, size, weight, slope, and style to make up a printable or displayable set of characters. Font characters include letters, numbers, symbols, and punctuation marks. It is important to be intentional when choosing fonts because they can affect readability, influence tone, and reflect professionalism all of which will influence how ideas are communicated.
It's important to choose fonts deliberately, as they can affect readability and tone, and reflect professionalism - which in turn affects how messages are communicated to your direct mail audience.

How are fonts differentiated?

  • Standard fonts: Standard fonts are all fonts that are already stored by default in programs such as Word or Adobe, e.g. Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri. These are always accessible and do not need to be installed. Therefore, you do not need to explicitly send them to us.
You can find a list of Microsoft standard fonts here.

  • Free fonts: In addition to the standard fonts, there are other fonts that are available for download free of charge and are thus freely accessible to everyone. However, these are not pre-installed but have to be downloaded separately.

  • Licensed fonts: In addition to the freely available fonts, there are also licensed fonts that must be purchased.

Important: optilyz does not purchase fonts for you at any time. These must be provided to us by you if you want to use them within your mailings.

  • Corporate fonts: Many companies are again placing special emphasis on corporate identity and corporate design and have therefore developed their own fonts.

If this is also the case with you, these must be made available to us.

How and in which format must non-standard fonts be delivered to optilyz?

Ideally, you should supply fonts in .otf or .ttf format. You are also very welcome to send us zip files containing multiple fonts. This is especially convenient if you want to provide a certain font in different styles (bold, italic, etc.).

Send the fonts to your direct contact at optilyz or simply via e-mail to support@optilyz.com.

The most important thing is that your fonts are also embedded in your document. You can read how this works here.

How many fonts can be used per mailing?

There is no limit. Feel free to use as many as necessary, but as few as possible. The recipient should not be overwhelmed by different fonts, but technically it is no problem for us to store and use several fonts for you.

Can this font then be used for every mailing?

Yes, if you have sent us the font with all its variations, we will store it especially for you and can then access it for every mailing.

Do I have to take anything into account regarding to postal specifications when using fonts?

Do I have to take anything into account with regard to postal specifications when using fonts?

Yes, but only for the postal-relevant fields in your mailing, e.g. the address field. As a prerequisite for sending dialog mail, your mailings must be fully automation-capable. Fonts also play a role here. Before designing your mailing, read through this article section to be fully informed.

Is it possible to get advice from optilyz regarding fonts?

We are not a design agency and therefore do not provide advice directly. However, you are always welcome to send your contact person drafts of your mailings and ask for an opinion. Since we see hundreds of mailings every day, we can certainly provide supportive feedback.
